Frequently Asked Question - Five

Question:  I heard that all anglers received a trophy.  Is that true?

Answer:  Yes.  The Fermi team received the Champion Trophy for winning the 1st Annual Lake Michigan Fishing Challenge while the Argonne Team received the Participant Trophy.

Frequently Asked Question - Four

Question:  What's with the hook? (see picture below)

Answer:  That's known as the "Argonne Device" that allows the delicate anglers from the multi-purpose lab to handle the icky fish.  And while the pictures show only Jayme using it, it's likely that was just clever photo work and that all of the anglers on the PassTime used similar techniques.

Frequently Asked Question - Three

Question:  I noticed the blog only has the pictures of the the fish caught.  I know those morons from Fermi are snap-happy.  Where are the rest of the pictures?  And isn't there some place where we could see pictures from past trips?

Answer:  You are correct, there is a shutterfly site with all the Lake Michigan trips, including this one.  Here's the link:  http://engineeringlakemichigan.shutterfly.com/

The Trophy

Here's a official trophy for the Annual Lake Michigan Fishing Challenge

The winning team will retain possession of the trophy at their lab until next year's fishing challenge.  There are rules however.
  1. The trophy must be respected!
  2. The trophy must be displayed in a place of honor throughout the year. It is acceptable for each member of the winning team to have a turn to display the trophy in their office for example.
  3. Each time the trophy changes location, a photo of the new location should be provided for posting on the blog.
  4. The trophy must be present in all breakout sessions during Red Team Reviews or Director's Reviews if one or more members of the winning team is involved in said reviews.  Photo evidence is required.

Frequently Asked Question - Two

Question:  What is considered appropriate footwear on the boat
Answer:  It's best to give example from previous trips.  One of these is inappropriate.

Frequently Asked Question - One

Question:  How is the fishing order determined?
Answer:  The ORDER is generally random draw or some other method such as feats of strength, breath holding, who can smoke the most cigarettes in 10 minutes, etc..

The fishing ROTATION is a little different.  The captain will set out a number of lines and fishing will start.  The first angler will be declared "UP" and will have 15 minutes to respond to a bite on any of the lines. If the angler does not land a fish during the 15 minutes, the angler remains in the rotation. If the angler lands a fish that angler is out of the rotation. Here's an example:

Rotation A
Angler 1
Angler 2 - lands fish
Angler 3
Angler 4 - lands fish
Angler 5 - lands fish
Angler 6

Rotation B
Angler 1
Angler 3 - lands fish
Angler 6

Rotation C
Angler 1 - lands fish
Angler 6

Rotation D
Angler 6 fishes until they land a fish.
At this point the pressure is enormous to land a fish as everyone is waiting to get back in the rotation.

Once Angler 6 lands a fish, the rotation starts over.  This rotation gives everyone a chance to land at least one fish and even out the number of fish per angler.

One additional note:  Those new to Lake Michigan Salmon fishing should be prepared to perform a "first fish" dance upon landing an inaugural fish.

1st Annual Challenge Information

The first annual Fermi/Argonne Fishing Challenge is set for Friday May 18th.  Both labs have assembled the finest available anglers who are able to take a Friday off in mid-May.  Here's the details:

Captain Jerry of West Wind Charters has arranged for two (2) boats to host the challenge.  The West Wind is based out of North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois.  It's probably a good idea to check the West Wind Charters web site for additional information about the the trip.  A note of caution:  The speed limit is 25 mph on 7th street.  That's 25 mph.  Go 25 mph if you know what's good for you.

There's a link on the West Wind Charters web page with good directions.  It takes longer than you think to get there, so leave enough time to park and haul your stuff to the dock.

It's a good idea to buy your fishing license in advance.  Here's a link to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.  In addition to the Resident Fishing (code 400) license, make sure you also purchase the Lake Michigan Electronic Salmon Stamp (code 700).  If you order online, it should be $23.04 with the fees and taxes. Of course, remember to bring the license on the 18th.

Please prepare your fishing hazard analyses  (Fing HAs) in advance and the fishing coordinator of each team will review them at a "tackle box" meeting at the dock prior to departure.

Our plan is to leave the dock at noon for an afternoon of fishing.  If everything goes as planned. we should be back on the dock after limiting out around 5:00 when we'll do the final count and weigh in.  The weigh in rules are listed at right.

Since traffic is usually terrible on a Friday afternoon, we'll plan at going to a restaurant at Gurnee Mills for the trophy presentation and to wait out the traffic.

There is some weather information at the right.  If everyone has a text-able phone, I'll send out updates the morning on the 18th if the weather forces a trip cancelation.
