The first annual Fermi/Argonne Fishing Challenge is set for Friday May 18th. Both labs have assembled the finest available anglers who are able to take a Friday off in mid-May. Here's the details:
Captain Jerry of West Wind Charters has arranged for two (2) boats to host the challenge. The West Wind is based out of North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. It's probably a good idea to check the West Wind Charters web site for additional information about the the trip. A note of caution: The speed limit is 25 mph on 7th street. That's 25 mph. Go 25 mph if you know what's good for you.
There's a link on the West Wind Charters web page with good directions. It takes longer than you think to get there, so leave enough time to park and haul your stuff to the dock.
It's a good idea to buy your fishing license in advance. Here's a link to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. In addition to the Resident Fishing (code 400) license, make sure you also purchase the Lake Michigan Electronic Salmon Stamp (code 700). If you order online, it should be $23.04 with the fees and taxes. Of course, remember to bring the license on the 18th.
Please prepare your fishing hazard analyses (Fing HAs) in advance and the fishing coordinator of each team will review them at a "tackle box" meeting at the dock prior to departure.
Our plan is to leave the dock at noon for an afternoon of fishing. If everything goes as planned. we should be back on the dock after limiting out around 5:00 when we'll do the final count and weigh in. The weigh in rules are listed at right.
Since traffic is usually terrible on a Friday afternoon, we'll plan at going to a restaurant at Gurnee Mills for the trophy presentation and to wait out the traffic.
There is some weather information at the right. If everyone has a text-able phone, I'll send out updates the morning on the 18th if the weather forces a trip cancelation.
