Question: How is the fishing order determined?
Answer: The ORDER is generally random draw or some other method such as feats of strength, breath holding, who can smoke the most cigarettes in 10 minutes, etc..
The fishing ROTATION is a little different. The captain will set out a number of lines and fishing will start. The first angler will be declared "UP" and will have 15 minutes to respond to a bite on any of the lines. If the angler does not land a fish during the 15 minutes, the angler remains in the rotation. If the angler lands a fish that angler is out of the rotation. Here's an example:
Rotation A
Angler 1
Angler 2 - lands fish
Angler 3
Angler 4 - lands fish
Angler 5 - lands fish
Angler 6
Rotation B
Angler 1
Angler 3 - lands fish
Angler 6
Rotation C
Angler 1 - lands fish
Angler 6
Rotation D
Angler 6 fishes until they land a fish.
At this point the pressure is enormous to land a fish as everyone is waiting to get back in the rotation.
Once Angler 6 lands a fish, the rotation starts over. This rotation gives everyone a chance to land at least one fish and even out the number of fish per angler.
One additional note: Those new to Lake Michigan Salmon fishing should be prepared to perform a "first fish" dance upon landing an inaugural fish.
I landed my first in 1992. The Argonne boat will use a mix of river dancing and hip hip for the first fish dance.
